In Solidworks assembly, the sketch can be used for mating. All one needs is to make the appropriate sketch visible and use the mating feature to use the lines, points for mating. Sometimes, it is difficult to find a mating reference and in that case sketch can be useful. Specific sketches can be added in a part just for use in mating.
