OBJ file format, free-form capabilities

Hello!

Are there users experienced with the advanced features of the OBJ file format? I'm interested in surface modelling via Python and would like to use a open file format for this purpose. I have found some information in the specification of the OBJ format but none of the examples work correctly for me. Are there open source viewers on the LINUX platform available which can handle the advanced features of the OBJ file format? I would be grateful for any ideas!
